Life Sciences Discovery Fund: research funding opportunities presentation Jan. 10 in Pelton

January 2008

The Life Sciences Discovery Fund announces two upcoming grant competitions and, to help guide applicants through the proposal process, a presentation by Dr. Mark Hertle, the organization's senior program officer.

The LSDF provides grants for two different kinds of funding opportunities: projects and programs. Project proposals and program proposals should leverage the state's investment in research by achieving three goals: promoting health, making the life sciences industry more competitive and strengthening Washington's economy.

Hertle's public presentation Thursday, Jan. 10, 3-4 p.m. in Pelton Auditorium will review the two LSDF grant competitions, highlighting their distinctive features and explaining what funds are available, who is eligible and the request for proposal process.

LSDF 08-01 — Project proposals

Projects are individual scientific studies, relatively limited in scope, with a sharply defined research focus. The LSDF will release the RFP Jan. 23, with letters of intent due Feb. 20 and proposals due April 16. The organization will award approximately $6 million to $8 million in grants. The award announcement will take place by early August 2008.

LSDF 08-02 — Program proposals

Programs are strategic research initiatives, broader in scope than projects, and designed to address problems within a field of study and to position an organization or organizations for future competitiveness and leadership. The organization will release an RFP Feb. 27. The letters of intent will be due on March 26, with full proposals due June 4. The LSDF will award approximately $18 million to $20 million in program grants. Look for announcement of award selections early next December.
