Don't let flu catch you unvaccinated

Center News

January 2008

Influenza season is just around the corner and that means it's not too late to protect yourself and your loved ones by getting a flu shot. Annual vaccination is the best way to prevent seasonal flu, but to avoid flu and other respiratory illnesses, it is also important to practice good health habits.

Avoid close contact with people with colds. When you are sick, keep your distance to protect others from getting sick. If possible, stay home from work, school and don't run errands when you are sick. Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing. Germs spread when a person touches something that is contaminated and then touches his or her eyes, nose or mouth, so wash your hands frequently to enhance protection. Get plenty of sleep, be physically active, manage your stress, drink plenty of fluids and eat nutritious food. And remember, staff with even mild respiratory symptoms should not enter the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance until symptoms are resolved.

Flu shots are still available free to Center staff. Please check the Environmental Health & Safety Office Web site at centernet.fhcrc.org/CN/depts/ehs/occupational_health/index.xml for upcoming health-clinic schedules.
