Roth wins DARPA award for metabolic-hibernation research

The Basic Science Division's Dr. Mark Roth received a Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency Award for Excellence during DARPA Tech 2007 last week in Anaheim, Calif.

DARPA Director Dr. Anthony Tether presented the Award for Significant Technical Achievement to Roth for his leadership and scientific expertise to the DARPA Surviving Blood Loss program. Roth and his team successfully demonstrated a hydrogen sulfide therapy involving the reversible reduction of a mammal's metabolic activity without long-term side effects. The results of this effort have led to technology that could dramatically improve the survival rate of wounded fighters and provide revolutionary improvements in the prevention and control of other medical complications on the battlefield. DARPA is a major funder of Roth's research.
