This summer's Biomedical Research Integrity Series concludes with the lecture, "Considering Animals in Research: Where Do You Fit In?" Tuesday, Aug. 28, at 2 p.m. in D1-080/084 (Sze East and West) in the Thomas Building. The speaker is Dr. Cynthia Pekow, chief of the Veterinary Medical Unit at the VA Puget Sound Health Care System and clinical associate professor in the Department of Comparative Medicine at the University of Washington.

Animals figure into our lives, sometimes in ways we do not consider. They are sources of companionship, entertainment, food, fiber, protection, status and sport. Discussion of animals in medical research often provokes strong emotional response. Working at an institution where laboratory animals play a vital role in advancing health research, what should we know about these animals, and what considerations can we offer to enhance their well-being?

This lecture will be of interest to Center researchers whether they work with animals in their studies or not. In fact, all faculty and staff members are invited and encouraged to attend.

The Biomedical Research Integrity Series is a collaborative event sponsored by the University of Washington Department of Biomedical History and Ethics and the Center's Research Ethics Education Program.

There is no need to register for this lecture. Postdoctoral fellows and graduate students who attend will receive credit towards the Research Ethics Education Program. For more information, contact Lee Strucker, (206) 667-1247, lstrucke@fhcrc.org.
