Infants with leukemia: Dramatic cure rates
Fred Hutchinson researchers have achieved unprecendented success rates in treating infants with acute lymphoblastic leukemia, a disease notoriously difficult to treat in children less than one year old. Led by Dr. Jean Sanders, the team reports a 76 percent survival rate by using radiation therapy followed by bone-marrow transplantation. For infants treated only with conventional chemotherapy, the survival rate is around 30 percent.

Calcium connection to colon protection
Women who consume calcium may significantly lower their risk of colorectal cancer, according to a recent study by Fred Hutchinson researchers. Women who consume more than 800 milligrams of calcium each day — from food or supplements — reduce their risk of colorectal cancer by as much as 26 percent compared to women who consume about 400 milligrams of calcium each day. Colorectal cancer is the third leading cause of cancer death.

Test of HIV vaccine holds promise
A promising new vaccine to prevent HIV/AIDS is being tested by the Fred Hutchinson-led HIV Vaccine Trials Network and the pharmaceutical company Merck & Co., Inc. The study could accelerate HIV-vaccine development by guiding scientific decisions for future HIV-vaccine trials.

Generous support for lifesaving research
Seattle philanthropist Robert M. "Bob" Arnold, whose family was instrumental in establishing Fred Hutchinson, has added a new chapter to his family's legacy of support for the center with an unprecedented donation of $15 million for cancer research. The gift will ignite initiatives aimed at new and better ways to prevent, diagnose and cure cancer.
