'Visionary investor' provides flexible funds for innovative research

As government funding for innovative science is scaled back, visionary investor Bob Arnold is helping the Hutchinson Center stay at the forefront of unprecedented discovery and achievement with an unrestricted $15 million gift. His generous 2005 contribution is fueling Center growth by attracting more top scientists, developing new technologies and providing stepping stones to large-scale grants.

Two global killers working in tandem
Malaria may be fueling the spread of HIV in areas of sub-Saharan Africa where there is a substantial overlap between the two diseases, while HIV may be playing a role in boosting adult malaria-infection rates in some parts of the region, according to a new study by researchers at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and the University of Washington.

Predictive powers of a protein molecule
More than 10 years ago, Hutchinson Center researcher Peggy Porter and colleagues identified a protein that prevents cells from dividing. Now, according to a large, randomized clinical trial, abnormally low levels of this protein in tumor cells are indicative of decreased breast-cancer survival. While more study is needed to determine which patients would benefit most, the findings may eventually improve care for patients by helping doctors predict outcome and tailor treatment for women with hormone-receptor positive tumors.

Center Survivorship Program opens doors and offers help
The Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center Survivorship Program, with support from the Lance Armstrong Foundation and private donors, is available to help patients pursue healthy living and navigate any subsequent health challenges. The Survivorship Center provides assistance and information to cancer survivors who can face problems such as increased risks for disease and other medical concerns.

Cancer Prevention Clinic provides public link to Center research
Half of men and a third of women can expect to develop cancer during their lifetimes, but pinpointing an individual's risk isn't part of a typical annual physical. A new clinic on the Hutchinson Center campus has opened to meet that need and help beat those odds. The Cancer Prevention Clinic, located at the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance outpatient clinic, offers state-of-the-art cancer early detection, risk assessment and counseling services for any Western Washington resident.

CARB Study: Meals served with a side of science
Increasing evidence suggests that obesity might play a role in developing several types of cancer. Hutchinson Center researchers are studying how weight and different carbohydrates affect cancer risks through a large feeding study funded by the National Cancer Institute.
