This fall, two Hutchinson Center researchers will be honored at the White House with the prestigious Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers.

Lee Hartwell
Drs. Harmit Malik and Ulrike Peters are among the 100 who were chosen nationwide to receive the award from President Obama. In announcing the award, the president described them this way: "These extraordinarily gifted young scientists and engineers represent the best in our country." Another of our young investigators, Dr. Wenying Shou, was selected to join the W.M. Keck Foundation’s 2009 class of Distinguished Young Scholars in Medical Research.

The most effective way that the Center contributes to medical science is by recruiting the brightest young researchers like Malik, Peters and Shou, and then using our resources to support their work and career development. In this issue of Quest, you’ll read about some of our other scientists who are making extraordinary contributions to cancer research. Drs. Patrick Paddison, Elahe Mostaghel, Amanda Paulovich and Toshiyasu Taniguchi are part of this new generation of researchers.

With your ongoing financial support, we can continue to foster young researchers and their groundbreaking ideas.
