Driving patients is all in the family
Volunteering
for Tim Doyle is a family affair. A volunteer van driver for Hutch patients
and their families since 1986, Doyle took over for his parents, who had done
the same job for 10 years.
A fire fighter for the King County Fire Department, Doyle has a lot of free time between shifts and likes to fill it with a volunteer job he calls “rewarding.”
“If you really want to be rewarded, this is the job,” says Doyle. “You can see it on patients’ faces every time you pick them up. They’re thinking, ‘Thank God I don’t have to worry about getting around an unfamiliar city.’”

As a professional baseball family, it’s appropriate that Karen and Jamie Moyer have stepped up to the plate for the Hutchinson Center.
During the last three years, Karen and Jamie—the No. 1 pitcher for the Seattle Mariners—have helped raise more than $325,000 for cancer research at the Hutch. Their position with the baseball team and prominence in the community has led to several successful fund-raising projects for the Hutch, including the Hutch Award baseball luncheon, two Mariners team cookbooks and a set of Mariners greeting cards.
Karen is also a board member of the Hutchinson Center Foundation, the fund-raising arm of the Hutch.
Their latest project is the 2000 edition of the Mariners family cookbook, sponsored by the Mariner Wives community-service organization. Underwritten by the From the Heart Foundation, it’s already raised $100,000 for the Hutch’s pediatric oncology department—halfway to its goal after only two months of sales. The cookbook is available at Mariners home games and at Mariners stores for $10. (For information, call 800-MY-MARINERS.)
“We’ve known several special patients at the Hutchinson Center and seen what a difference it makes in their lives. It has given them a new lease on life,” says Karen. “Jamie and I believe strongly in giving back to the community and our support of the Hutch is one of the most important ways that we do.”
