Supporting the Hutchinson Center is easy through payroll deduction at your workplace

As fall approaches, please remember the Hutchinson Cen- ter as a worthy recipient of your generosity. One of the easiest ways to give is through payroll deduction at work.

Federal, state and county employees may donate through their workplace campaigns.

Private businesses large and small-from Microsoft, Boeing (see story below) and Eddie Bauer to Dick's Drive-In-allow employees to route gifts to the Hutchinson Center through campaigns like United Way or federations like Community Health Charities.

Other employee campaigns may allow employees to write in the Hutchinson Center as an independent charity by listing "Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center" on the pledge form.

For more information, consult your human resources department at work or call Michael Rubin in the Hutchinson Center's development department at (206) 667-5377.

$50,000 from Lynch Family Foundation supports postdocs through Jacob Green charity golf gala

Eric LynchAs a scientist, Eric Lynch knows how much postdoctoral students contribute to advancing research. That's why the Lynch Family Foundation stepped forward with a $50,000 challenge gift for Hutchinson Center postdocs during the Jacob Green Charity Golf Classic Gala on June 21. Lynch's gala speech and grant inspired other guests to donate an additional $50,000.

Each year, Green directs donations from the gala to support two postdoctoral students. Along with the gala, Green's golf tournament and auction raised a record $275,000 for the Hutchinson Center. This pushed his total donations over $1 million since he began the golf tournament and auction in 1988.

Businesses can support the Hutch in lieu of holiday gifts

Companies searching for meaningful holiday gifts for employees, clients or other associates need look no further. They can easily make donations to the Hutch-inson Center in lieu of gifts.

The Hutch is again offering elegant holiday cards that recognize the gift. These cards can be inserted into other holiday cards or sent on their own. For more information, call Jana Mizokawa at (206) 667-3766.

Bequests to the Hutchinson Center: legacies of hope

A gift through your will can help ensure the future of cancer research

In 25 short years, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center has become one of the world's leading comprehensive cancer centers, thanks in part to the generous financial support of countless caring individuals. There is, however, much more to do in the fight against cancer.

Through your will, you can leave a legacy of hope to ensure that new cancer treatments and prevention strategies will be available to future generations. A bequest is a transfer, by will, of property to an individual or a charitable organization like the Hutchinson Center. For many people, a bequest offers the opportunity to make a larger gift than would be possible during one's life. A bequest gift may also reduce tax obligations owed by your estate.

Here is what two of our supporters have to say about their bequests:

"While I'm in my early 30s and look forward to a long, full life, from my experience as a patient at the Hutch, I am intimately aware of my own mortality," said Dana Togni. "Having a will gives me the peace of mind that the belongings I've accumulated so conscientiously will be distributed in a meaningful way. Also, by making my wishes known, I spare my family the agony of guessing as to what I'd want done.

"My gift will help fund the effort to provide more and better cures, giving others the same opportunity I had to receive these precious "extra" years. I can't imagine a more appropriate way to say 'thank you.'"

Longtime Hutchinson Center supporter James Hutton said his bequest "helps to return something to the community. The Hutch's cancer research benefits all of us. My bequest is also in memory of my mother and her brother who died of cancer. Cancer touches many people and it is important to support the research that will find a cure."

We hope you'll join these and many other caring people by making a bequest to the Hutchinson Center.

Donate to the Hutch in lieu of holiday gifts

It’s not too early to start thinking about the holidays, and contributions to the Hutchinson Center can make meaningful gifts for your friends and family. For each gift recipient, the Hutch will send festive cards with the inscription: “In the spirit of the holidays, a donation has been made in your honor to the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center.”

For more information about holiday giving to the Hutch, call (206) 667-5242.

Boeing, Microsoft employees high on the Hutchinson Center

During the past year, workplace donations to the Hutchinson Center continued to increase. People from all over the state and beyond took advantage of this easy and efficient method of supporting cancer research.

Last year, the Hutchinson Center ranked 14th out of nearly 4,000 possible charities in Boeing's workplace giving campaign, known as the Employee's Community Fund of Puget Sound. Microsoft employees donated the fourth largest sum of their campaign total last year to the Hutchinson Center. We greatly appreciate the support of all participants in the many workplace giving programs that support Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center.

The Joy of Giving

"To travel hopefully is a better thing than to arrive." -Robert Louis Stevenson

Life is a journey of uncertain length and circum- stance. When the going gets difficult, we rely on hope to carry us past the bumps.

But hope is more than wishful thinking. True hope springs from tangible sources that can only exist with our support, such as health care, medical research and education.

Nurture hope. It's a great traveling companion on the road of life.
