Scientific Discovery is dynamic in nature. It requires not only the best minds, but also funding that supports a wide range of research. At the Hutchinson Center, flexible funding addresses that need by allowing for the pursuit of the best resources and leads for early stage scientific achievement.

A new program, the President's Circle, complements established fundraising efforts by extending special opportunities to donors who make a commitment to discretionary funding. Supporters who make annual gifts of $10,000 or more in flexible funds will receive benefits — including interaction with President and Director Dr. Lee Hartwell and other Center scientists — that provide exclusive exposure to our cutting-edge science.
"This is an exciting new program that affords members a direct link with our research," said Michael Rubin, director of the President's Circle. "Visionary investors in the President's Circle ensure the Center has a source of stable, predictable funding to continue to make advances against cancer, HIV/AIDS and other life-threatening diseases."
The structure of the President's Circle program is designed to provide a funding base of support — equivalent to many millions in endowment — to ensure the Center can quickly advance innovative research and ideas that are not yet eligible for federal grants.
Rubin and his team are working to sign up 150 President's Circle members this year and 300 members by fiscal year 2009. "We're confident our supporters will want to help us sustain the progress that's vital to our mission," Rubin said. A group of donor volunteers, known as the President's Circle Council, will help lead the program.
"The President's Circle will offer an opportunity for us to share the detailed science behind, planning for, and execution of major new scientific directions," Hartwell said. "Examples in the last couple of years are proteomics, epigenetics, HIV-vaccine development and more. President's Circle members will be invited to meet faculty involved in these advances."
If you or someone you know would like to become a member of the President's Circle, please contact Michael Rubin at (206) 667-5377 or mrubin@fhcrc.org. More information is available at www.fhcrc.org/presidentscircle.

Workplace campaign season is just around the corner — time to think of the Hutchinson Center at work and spread the word about us.
Payroll deduction contributions are critical because they provide reliable, unrestricted income for a full year. Any government employee can donate through workplace campaigns — it is the easiest and most efficient way to give. Many private companies conduct campaigns as well; watch for us in your charity guide.
The Hutchinson Center will provide workplaces with posters, brochures, giveaways and speakers during the campaign season. For information call Stephanie Henderson at (206) 667-4974.

Claribel Trigve donated her Anacortes, Wash., home on the water to the Center to support research.
|
Claribel Trigve lived in her lovely waterfront home in Anacortes, Wash., since she and her late husband, Trig, built it in 1943. She loved her water view and enjoyed it in later years with a special sense of satisfaction. She had established a retained life estate and knew that when she could no longer live in her house or after her death, she had made arrangements for the Hutchinson Center to take over the responsibilities for selling her house and to use the proceeds from the sale to fund cancer research. Knowing all of this was in place gave Claribel a deep sense of peace of mind.
Claribel's only son, Larry, had died of cancer when he was a young man. Claribel felt that if by giving her house to the Center, "just one life could be saved," she would be deeply grateful.
This past year, Claribel moved into a retirement home, and the Hutchinson Center made arrangements to get her house ready to sell, listed it and accepted an offer of $900,000. On Claribel's 102nd birthday on Aug. 25, she celebrated a milestone birthday, her loving gift in memory of Trig and Larry and the completion of her personal lifesaving legacy to advance cancer research.
A gift of a personal residence, vacation home or farm with a retained life estate is an ideal way to make a significant gift to the Center without giving up the use of the property. You retain the right to use your property, get the benefit of a charitable income-tax deduction now to offset your current income, and have the satisfaction of supporting a cause that is close to your heart.
For free, no-obligation information about a retained life estates gift or any other legacy gift, please contact our Planned Giving Department at 206-667-3396, via e-mail at plannedgiving@fhcrc.org, or by visiting our Web site at www.fhcrcplannedgiving.org.

Click Wine Group will donate a portion of the proceeds from each bottle of FAT bastard wines sold during September and October 2006 to breast cancer research. The company's goal to raise a $75,000 donation marks a 50 percent increase from last year. Bottles of FAT bastard will be easy to find as each bottle will have a necker with an attached pink ribbon for consumers to wear and display.
"Breast cancer does not discriminate, it reaches women both young and old, and I hope in my lifetime we find a cure for this awful disease," said Peter Click, co-owner of FAT bastard and founder and CEO of Click Wine Group. "Together with the many consumers of FAT bastard wine, we're honored to support this important cause for four years running. We look forward to donating the proceeds of this program to our long-standing partners at both national and local organizations."
