The Thomas Medal is named for Fred Hutchinson’s Dr. E. Donnall Thomas, director emeritus of the center’s Clinical Research Division who won the 1990 Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine for his pioneering work in bone-marrow transplantation. The Fred Hutchinson Business Alliance, a group of regional business leaders united to conquer cancer, annually bestows the medal to honor those whose careers symbolize the inspiration, vision and leadership for which Thomas is renowned.

Among the firm’s largest holdings are Foss Maritime Company, Totem Ocean Trailer Express (TOTE), Sea Coast Towing and Delta Western, and an interest in Roche Harbor Resort & Marina together with their partner Rich Komen.
