The Moyer Foundation challenges gala goers with $1.5 million gift

Moyers match cash gifts for early detection research during annual Hutch Holiday Gala

Karen and Jamie Moyer
Karen and Jamie were named Distinguished Community Service honorees at the 2002 gala.

For Karen and Jamie Moyer, helping children and families in distress is the foundation of their life’s work. That’s one reason why they are strong supporters of Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center.

As founders of The Moyer Foundation and one of Major League Baseball’s leading philanthropic families, Karen and Jamie have spearheaded numerous fund-raising projects for Fred Hutchinson. In 2003, they teamed with the center to create The Gregory Fund, which is dedicated to funding research for early cancer detection.

Now they have stepped up to the plate to challenge others to support Fred Hutchinson. The Moyer Foundation offered to match every dollar — up to $1.5 million — donated at the Dec. 4 Hutch Holiday Gala during the Help the Hutch portion of the evening, an exciting 20-minute period where donors make cash gifts to support vital research.

Seattle Mariners All-Star pitcher Jamie Moyer has received many prestigious awards for his charitable work.

Proceeds from Help the Hutch benefit The Gregory Fund to advance early cancer-detection research at the center. The fund is named in honor of former Fred Hutchinson patient Gregory Chaya, whose successful fight against leukemia inspired the Moyers to join the fight against cancer.

“We are deeply grateful to receive the Moyers’ generous gift,” said Dr. Lee Hartwell, president and director. “Karen and Jamie have been tireless in their efforts to support Fred Hutchinson for many years, and their dedication to early detection research has inspired many others in the community to join the cause. Donations from individuals and private organizations like The Moyer Foundation are critical to our research efforts.”

The annual Hutch Holiday Gala is hosted by the Grace Heffernan Arnold Guild, a dedicated volunteer group that has helped the gala raise more than $36.5 million for research since 1975. Previous challenge-gift donors include Don Listwin and the Listwin Family Foundation, Craig and Marie Mundie, James and Sherry Raisbeck, and Bonnie and Jim Towne.

The Grace Heffernan Arnold Guild presented the 2004 Distinguished Community Service Award to Steve and Sharon Raible at the Hutch Holiday Gala on Dec. 4.

A six-year veteran of the 1976 inaugural Seattle Seahawk team, color commentator with Seahawks radio for 22 years, current “Voice of the Seahawks” and anchor for KIRO 7 for the past 12 years, Steve has long supported Fred Hutchinson’s Pete Gross House and Hutch Award Luncheon. He also supports many other community organizations, including Children’s Home Society of Washington, Big Brothers and Family Services. He has received United Way’s Community Service Award twice, was named Outstanding Role Model of 2000 by Big Brothers Big Sisters and was the 2001 recipient of the prestigious NCAA Silver Anniversary Award that recognizes former student-athletes who have distinguished themselves since completing their college athletics careers.

Sharon is a volunteer for immigrant advocacy, helping Vietnamese families reunite in the United States, is an animal rescue volunteer, led the civic group “Enumclaw 2000” for the Chamber of Commerce and is active in the Lupus Foundation of America, Inc. — Pacific Northwest Chapter.

“‘To those whom much is given, much is expected in return.’ They are words that mean a great deal to Sharon and me,” Steve said. “We have been blessed to be in a community we love and in a position to lend a hand. While we humbly accept this wonderful honor, we know those most deserving of recognition and support are the doctors, the researchers and the volunteers who are dedicated to saving lives. Our mark left on this world will be the good we can do for others. That is truly the highest praise any of us can receive.”

Presented annually, the Arnold Guild’s Distinguished Community Service Award recognizes individuals and organizations that have provided exceptional support in the fight against cancer. The selection is not based on monetary support, but rather on the honorees’ commitment and dedication to making a difference through personal interaction and involvement.
