Grace Heffernan Arnold |
Three decades ago, a group of friends hosted a small dinner party to benefit a promising new cancer research center, setting a humble foundation for what would become one of the region's grandest fund-raising events: the Hutch Holiday Gala.
As the Hutchinson Center developed a world-renowned reputation in the medical-research community, the Gala grew into a major social and charitable event that has raised $41.5 million for cancer research.
The 2005 Gala marks an important milestone — the 30th anniversary of both the Gala and the Hutchinson Center. On Dec. 3, nearly 900 people are expected to attend this historic celebration, which will feature a challenge to raise $3 million during the Help the Hutch portion of the evening.
Longtime supporter Robert M. Arnold, a retired bank executive, will match gifts during Help the Hutch dollar-for-dollar, up to $3 million. Bob's exciting challenge is part of his $15 million contribution to the Hutchinson Center. Not only is this the largest private gift in the Center's history, it is also unrestricted. As such, it allows the Center flexibility to direct resources to the areas of greatest need and promise.
Bob's gift honors the priorities of his late mother, Grace Heffernan Arnold, who helped establish the biomedical research institute that was the forerunner to the Hutchinson Center. A Seattle philanthropist, Grace supported plans to create the Hutchinson Center, but didn't live to see it happen. She died of cancer, as did one of her sons. After the founding of the Hutchinson Center, Arnold's family funded the Center's library in her honor, beginning an Arnold family legacy of giving that has grown along with the Center and the Gala.
In her memory, the Grace Heffernan Arnold Guild was formed to support the Hutchinson Center and host the Gala. And like the Gala itself, the guild has grown from a small cadre of friends to a devoted group of 43 volunteers who organize one of the most successful and exciting fund-raising events in the country — an event that has helped thousands of cancer patients worldwide.

One of baseball's greatest players will be the featured speaker at the Hutch Award Luncheon on Feb. 1 — Hall of Fame catcher Johnny Bench. A member of the legendary Cincinnati Reds "Big Red Machine" teams of the 1970s, Bench is considered the greatest catcher in baseball history.
The luncheon will honor a current Major League Baseball player with the 2005 Hutch Award, named for the late Fred Hutchinson, a star manager and pitcher who died of cancer in 1964. Each year, the award goes to the player who best exemplifies Hutchinson's leadership and courage on and off the field. Previous winners include Bench, Trevor Hoffman, Jamie Moyer, Mickey Mantle and Lou Brock.
Presented by General Motors, the luncheon includes live and silent auctions of autographs and other baseball memorabilia.
Join baseball stars and fans at this one-of-a-kind event at Safeco Field, 12-1:30 p.m. Learn more or register online at www.fhcrc.org/hutchaward or contact Eileen Harasimowicz at (206) 667-4149 or eharasim@fhcrc.org.

Success stories of patients who beat cancer helped inspire patrons of the Pete Gross House Luncheon, who raised $230,000 for the Hutchinson Center last September. The funds will support the Family Assistance Fund and the Pete Gross House, the 70-unit apartment building that offers lodging, comfort and hope to cancer patients and their families. The building is named after the late Seattle Seahawks play-by-play announcer Pete Gross. The luncheon's presenting sponsor was the Christopher Harper Trust. Additional sponsors were Greenbaum Home Furnishings and Costco Wholesale, exclusive radio partner Newsradio 710 KIRO, and travel partner American Airlines.

The challenge is its own reward when you take on a mountain to advance breast-cancer research. By joining the Climb to Fight Breast Cancer presented by Safeway, you lend your stamina and fund-raising talents to an important cause — while experiencing some of the world's most spectacular peaks.
In the summer of 2006, participating climbers will scale several of the Northwest's most breathtaking mountains, the fabled Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, and Mount Elbrus in Russia. The climbs will be guided by Alpine Ascents International and Portland Parks & Recreation. Sponsors include Safeway, KOMO 4, Outside Magazine, UPS and Alaska Airlines.
For a fund-raising minimum, anyone can sign up for the Climb to Fight Breast Cancer. The 2005 climbs raised a record $500,000. For more information or to sign up, call (206) 667-1398 or visit www.fhcrc.org/climb
