Dr. Denise A. Galloway, Ph.D., is the Interim Director and Member of the Human Biology Division and a Member of the Public Health Sciences Division at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. She is also a Research Professor at the University of Washington in the Departments of Microbiology and Pathology, and in the Pathobiology Graduate Program.
Galloway received a B.S. in Biological Sciences and a Ph.D. in Biology from the City University of New York. She did postdoctoral work in the Tumor Virus Group at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory before moving to the FHCRC as an Assistant Member.
Galloway has served on a variety of national advisory committees, including chairing the National Institutes of Health Experimental Virology and Virology A Study Sections, and chairing the National Cancer Institute's Committee on Basic and Preclinical Program Projects. She has been a councilor and section chair at the American Society of Microbiology, and has served on the education committee for the American Association for Cancer Research.
She has served as an associate editor for Journal of Infectious Diseases, Journal of General Virology, PLoS Pathogens and held positions on the editorial boards of several journals including Journal of Virology and Virology. She is a Fellow of the Academy of Microbiology and of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. In 2011, she was the leader of the Seattle HPV Team that won the AACR Team Science Award.
Galloway heads a laboratory that studies virus-associated cancers. She is an internationally recognized expert on human papillomaviruses, having contributed to understanding the mechanisms by which HPV causes cancer, the host immune response to infection, the development of virus-like particles, the natural history of infection and the risk factors associated with progression to malignancy. The Galloway Lab also studies skin cancer, both squamous cell skin cancer and Merkel Cell Carcinoma, investigating the role that viruses play in these cancers.
