The Thomas Medal is named for the Hutchinson Center's Emeritus Director of Clinical Research, who won the 1990 Nobel Prize in Medicine for pioneering bone-marrow transplantation. The Thomas Medal honors those who, like Dr. Thomas, have dedicated their lives to excellence. It is presented each year to a local corporation or business leader whose career has been hallmarked by the kind of inspirational vision, dedication and leadership for which Dr. Thomas is renowned.

This year Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center will host the Thomas Award Luncheon on Tuesday, October 9, 2007, at The Fairmont Olympic Hotel, Seattle.
At the luncheon we will present the 2007 E. Donnall Thomas Medal of Achievement to Safeway Inc., a multi-national corporation with an inspirational vision to improve the lives of those in the local communities that it serves. The company's support of community needs such as food banks, youth programs, cancer research, and disaster relief make it a leader amongst its peers.
The Thomas Medal, presented for the last 11 years, is awarded to a business leader or business whose career has been hallmarked by the kind of inspirational vision, dedication and leadership for which Dr. Thomas is renowned.
