The Moyer Foundation: Focus on early detection

Karen and Jamie Moyer

For Seattle Mariners pitcher and 2003 Hutch Award winner Jamie Moyer and his wife Karen, helping children and families in distress is the foundation of their life's work. That's one reason why they are strong supporters of Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center.

As founders of The Moyer Foundation and one of Major League Baseball's leading philanthropic families, Karen and Jamie have spearheaded numerous fund-raising projects for the Hutchinson Center. In 2003, they teamed with the Center to create The Gregory Fund, which is dedicated to funding research for early cancer detection.

In 2004, they stepped up to the plate to challenge others to support the Hutchinson Center. The Moyer Foundation matched every dollar — to $1.5 million — donated at the December 4, 2004 Hutch Holiday Gala during the "Help the Hutch" portion of the evening, an exciting 20-minute period where donors make cash gifts to support vital research.

Proceeds from Help the Hutch benefited The Gregory Fund to advance early cancer-detection research at the Center. The fund is named in honor of former Hutchinson Center patient Gregory Chaya, whose successful fight against leukemia inspired the Moyers to join the fight against cancer.

"We are deeply grateful to receive the Moyers' generous gift," said Dr. Lee Hartwell, president and director. "Karen and Jamie have been tireless in their efforts to support the Hutchinson Center for many years, and their dedication to early detection research has inspired many others in the community to join the cause. Donations from individuals and private organizations like The Moyer Foundation are critical to our research efforts."
