In 1997, a small group of men and women joined together to climb Mt. Adams to raise money for breast cancer research at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. Over the past ten years, the Climb to Fight Breast Cancer has grown to include summits in Washington state, Oregon, Africa, Russia and Mexico. Nearly $3 million dollars has been raised. Today, the Climb to Fight Breast Cancer Committee has evolved into a team of energetic volunteers committed to both breast cancer research and the exuberance of the outdoors.

Committee members who have participated in the event have proven to be an invaluable asset to the Climb to Fight Breast Cancer's success. However, mountain climbing experience is not required to be a member of this lively Committee.

The Climb to Fight Breast Cancer Committee welcomes new members with fresh ideas and enthusiasm for encouraging increased awareness in the community and raising money for Hutchinson Center scientists and their pilot studies aimed at finding a cure.

The 2008 climbs include Washington state's Mts. Rainier, Baker and Adams; Oregon's Mt. Hood; Africa's Mt. Kilimanjaro and Mexican volcanoes.

Activities

Climb to Fight Breast Cancer Committee goals include the following:

Breast Cancer Research at the Hutchinson Center

Breast cancer will strike one out of eight women in her lifetime. Every 12 minutes a woman dies from the disease. The Hutchinson Center is on the forefront of a cure. The broad range of research includes work on the basic cellular mechanisms of cancer development, risk factors, genetics, diagnosis, early detection, prognosis, prevention, counseling and treatment. Center researchers also develop and evaluate aggressive treatment strategies including therapies to prevent the reoccurrence of cancer after a bone-marrow or stem-cell transplant.

The Hutchinson Center relies on the private sector to provide seed money for scientists creating pilot studies aimed at eradicating breast cancer. This cutting edge research becomes a necessary first step toward large-scale research grants.

The Climb to Fight Breast Cancer proudly funds this research. Please join us today.
