In 2002, Center leaders formed the Research Ethics Training Committee to assess ethics education needs at the Center. The recommendations of this committee, with revisions from faculty and students, are the basis for the Research Ethics Education Program.
The program includes lectures, panel discussions, web-based training, colloquia, and case study discussion groups that provide staff and students with a variety of opportunities to engage in discussion and education on the responsible conduct of research. All postdoctoral researchers, clinical fellows, and graduate students are required to complete six ethics events while at FHCRC.
Program curriculum is reviewed by the Research Ethics Oversight Committee, which is composed of faculty, postdoctoral researchers and graduate students at the Center.
Program details are as follows:
Biomedical Research Integrity Series -- FHCRC collaborates with the University of Washington to present this lecture and case study series every summer. It includes lectures or panel discussions by local and national speakers as well as linked case study discussion groups. Topics are selected from the nine core instructional areas as defined by the Office of Research Integrity. The Ethics Event Schedule lists the current summer's BRI Series events by June of each year. Please note, only these collaborative BRI Series events can be used to meet UW specific requirements for those on training grants. Other events in the FHCRC Research Ethics Education Program cannot be applied to those UW requirements.
Case Study Discussion Groups -- FHCRC faculty lead case study discussion groups throughout the year. Discussion groups are listed in the Ethics Event Schedule. All trainees are required to attend at least one case study discussion group during their tenure at the Center.
Online Course -- FHCRC currently uses Columbia University's Responsible Conduct of Research Courses. Five modules, Conflicts of Interest, Mentoring, Responsible Authorship and Peer Review, Research Misconduct, and Data Acquisition and Management are currently available. This web-based program is funded by the Office of Research Integrity.
Videos and DVDs of research ethics education lectures -- These are available on reserve in the Arnold Library and can be checked out for 24 hours. Credit for viewing can only be received for lectures that trainees did not attend in person.
Human Subjects Training -- Training in the conduct of human subjects research is required for all key personnel responsible for the design and conduct of research involving human subjects. Training is available online or in person and is open to all FHCRC staff.
Research Involving Animals -- Training in the use of animals in research is available through the FHCRC Institutional Review Office.
Lists of ethics education events beginning in 2003 can be found in the Ethics Event Archive.
