A Study of Cancer Diagnosis as a Risk Factor for Personal Bankruptcy

PI: Scott Ramsey, MD, PhD

The goal of this study is to determine whether a diagnosis of cancer increases one's risk of incurring personal bankruptcy. We will conduct a retrospective double cohort study to measure whether a diagnosis of cancer is associated with an increased risk of personal bankruptcy in subsequent years. For the cohort of cancer patients, we will link Western Washington Surveillance Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) cancer registry records to Federal Bankruptcy Court records at the level of the individual. For each cancer patient, we will identify an age- and sex-matched control without cancer from driver's license records, and link that group with Federal Bankruptcy Court records.
