Understanding and Preventing Breast Cancer Disparities in Latinas

About the University of New Mexico Cancer Center

As the Official Cancer Center of the State of New Mexico, and the only National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center in the state, the UNM Cancer Center offers an unmatched depth and breadth of cancer care in New Mexico.

The UNM Cancer Center is home to the state’s largest and most experienced team of cancer specialists. Their team of more than 85 board-certified cancer physicians, representing every area of oncology, and more than 120 cancer researchers, has been recruited from prestigious institutions from all over the world.

Every year, they treat more than 10,000 patients from every county in New Mexico and the surrounding region in more than 100,000 patient visits. The UNM Cancer Center treats roughly half of the adults and nearly all children diagnosed with cancer in the state every year.

To ensure that all New Mexicans have access to world-class cancer care and benefit from advances in cancer research, the University of New Mexico Cancer Center provides state-of-the-art cancer diagnosis and treatment, conducts outstanding research to discover the causes and the cures for cancer, educates the next generation of cancer healthcare professionals and is focused on overcoming the significant cancer health disparities in the Southwest through the development of a statewide cancer treatment network and community-based outreach programs.

As a minority-majority state, more than 50 percent of our patients are ethnic minorities, primarily Hispanic and Native American, with unique cancer patterns and significant cancer disparities. To ensure that all New Mexicans can access outstanding cancer care, we are building a statewide network of cancer centers and clinics across our diverse region—in Las Cruces with Memorial Medical Center, in Santa Fe with Christus—St. Vincent Regional Medical Center and the Santa Fe Cancer Institute, in Farmington with San Juan Regional Cancer Center and in some of the most remote regions of our state. We are also working with Tribal and rural communities across New Mexico to deliver cancer education, screening, prevention and treatment programs.

Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center is a world leader in research to prevent, detect and treat cancer and other life-threatening diseases.
