VIDD Member Dr. Peter Gilbert, who is also the Director of VIDD’s Population Science Program, Member of Public Health Sciences, Principal Investigator of the HVTN Statistical Data Management Center, and Research Professor in Biostatistics at the University of Washington, was selected as a Fellow of the American Statistical Association in April 2014. His tremendous contribution to the field of biostatistics, particularly designing and analyzing large-scale HIV vaccine efficacy trials, is hard to overestimate.
The American Statistical Association, established in 1839, honors its most esteemed members each year for excellence in their fields. Approximately 40 members are chosen for this highly prestigious award each year out of a membership of ~18,000.
Gilbert, internationally recognized as one of the field’s preeminent HIV vaccine scholars, has pioneered the conceptualization, construction and implementation of novel biostatistical methods that offer genuine promise for identifying effective HIV vaccines. He is one of the world’s foremost authorities on the HIV epidemic in the United States, Thailand and sub-Saharan Africa.
This honor was bestowed upon Dr. Peter Gilbert for his outstanding contributions in biostatistical research relevant to HIV vaccine efficacy trials by leading study design and analysis of the majority of HIV vaccine efficacy trials that have been conducted to date.
Gilbert has been with VIDD since 2001 and was promoted to Member in 2007. He will be honored at an awards ceremony in Boston on August 5, 2014.
