Sexually Transmitted Diseases

A large variety of pathogens cause sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) in humans, which can manifest as genital ulcers, infertility or AIDS, to name a few. Many STDs are caused by chronic viral infections and therefore prevention is currently a major focus for reducing disease prevalence. The prevention strategies of anti-viral prophylaxis, vaccination and public health education have shown some highly promising results on diseases such as HIV, herpes simplex virus 2 and human papillomavirus; including antiretroviral therapy, vaccine clinical trials and condom use. These studies combine a wide range of VIDD disciplines that work together; epidemiology, virology, social science, and statistics.
