Appointments & Referrals

To make an appointment for yourself, a family member or friend, please contact the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance (SCCA) Patient Intake Office:

The Clinical Coordinator (a Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center physician) will review the information and contact the caller to discuss the patient's case and to determine the patient's eligibility for therapies offered by Fred Hutchinson.

Appointments and Referrals
To make an appointment, call the SCCA Patient Intake Office: (800) 804-8824

In some cases, the Coordinator may recommend that a patient come to Seattle for a consultation appointment with a physician who specializes in the patient's disease and the treatment protocols. Prior to the appointment, the patient's relevant medical records will be requested and reviewed by the consulting physician. Appointments are generally scheduled two to three weeks in advance to allow time for medical records to be obtained and reviewed prior to the consultation. If appropriate, tissue-typing studies may also be initiated so that results are available at the time of the appointment.

During the appointment, appropriate treatment options will be suggested and explained. Facility tours and housing tours may also be scheduled during the visit.

A packet of information will be sent to help the patient prepare for his or her visit to Seattle. It includes transportation information, short-term housing options, and a Planning Ahead for Treatment guide. The patient is encouraged to read the guide and prepare a list of questions to be addressed by the consulting physician.

The Consultation Appointment:

The medical consultation appointment takes place in the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance Clinic and generally lasts from 60 to 90 minutes. Topics discussed may include treatment options, success rates for specific procedures, and management of complications. If further clinical information is needed, the consultant may order laboratory work and/or diagnostic procedures, such as a bone marrow aspiration. A nurse is available to perform these procedures and will also provide a brief tour of the Transplant Clinics.

After all test results have been evaluated, the consulting physician will dictate a comprehensive letter to the referring physician summarizing the patient's case and proposed treatment plan. A copy of this letter is available to the patient upon request.

Orientation to Support Services and Lodging:

Adult consultation patients and families are invited to schedule a tour of the transplant unit on 8 NE Floor at University of Washington Medicine. This tour is offered from 2:50 until 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Pediatric patients and families will have an opportunity to tour the transplant unit at Seattle Children's, Monday through Friday (tour times are flexible). We request that you schedule an inpatient unit tour in advance of your visit.

The Pete Gross House is located at 525 Minor Avenue North. Built in 1999, the House has furnished apartments that have been specially designed for the comfort of oncology patients and families. One-bedroom, two-bedroom and studio apartments are available for stays of at least 30 days. For more information, call the SCCA Housing Coordinator at (206) 288-1078.

If you plan to be in Seattle the day before or after your medical consultation, a visit to the Pete Gross House and a few other apartment buildings with a volunteer driver can be arranged.
