The Women’s Intervention Nutrition Study (WINS) is a study to test whether a low-fat diet (15%of calories), as an adjuvant to drug therapy, will reduce breast cancer recurrence and improve survival in women with localized breast cancer.
Eligible women were randomized into one of two groups. One group was counseled to reduce fat intake to 15% of calories during an intensive four-month intervention period which was followed by monthly group sessions. The other group received no dietary counseling and they are expected that they will maintain their usual diet.
It is hypothesized that the dietary intervention group will have higher rates of disease-free survival than the non-dietary intervention group. It is further hypothesized that the dietary intervention group participants will have lower rates of breast cancer recurrence than the non-dietary intervention group participants.
WINS is a collaborative study, funded by the National Cancer Institute, between 39 sites across the United States. It was started in 1994, and there are approximately 2,400 women participating in this study. Although recruitment for this study ended in 2000, the study will continue until December of 2003.
