DIVISION NOTES

All divisions: Breast cancer proposals

The U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command is soliciting proposals for research into the prevention and cure of breast cancer and improvement of quality of life for those with breast cancer.

The 1997 Defense Appropriations Act's breast cancer research program provides $106 million for this purpose. Proposals will be in four categories:

Idea awards, for speculative but especially promising and creative ideas that may yield a high payoff, even if they lack pilot data.

Clinical translational research awards, for the application of highly promising and well-founded laboratory or other preclinical strategies to breast cancer patients. Initial clinical results must be obtained during the lifetime of the award.

Computer-based decision support systems awards, for projects that explore innovative, computer-based decision support systems.

Training and recruitment awards, for pre- and post-doctoral traineeships, career development awards and sabbaticals, particularly for younger scientists, minorities and scientists not previously involved in breast cancer research.

Proposal receipt deadline for all categories is June 25, except for clinical translational research pre-proposals, for which the deadline is June 11. For more information, call Carol Friedman, funding specialist in Grants and Contracts, at Ext. 4621.

Basic Sciences

Dr. Bruce Edgar in the Basic Sciences Division was promoted to associate member, effective March 7. Edgar's research focuses on understanding the genetic logic underlying development in fruit flies. He joined the Center's faculty four years ago.

Molecular Medicine

Dr. Jim Olson received a Burrough's Wellcome Courier Award in March.
