Special procedures, such as frozen sectioning of undecalcified bone, can frequently be accommodated. Tissues may be frozen for cryosectioning or fixed in any of several available fixatives. Routine tissue processing to paraffin blocks is accomplished using a state-of-the-art vacuum infiltration processor. This processing technique results in beautifully infiltrated specimens, greatly enhancing the sectioning properties of the tissue block. Alternative processing schemes for special fixatives like methyl carnoys and paraformaldehyde also are performed on a regular basis. After embedding, blocks may be thin-sectioned to the specifications of the investigator or returned uncut for storage or sectioning in another lab. Many different stains can be performed by the resource, including automated immunostaining and in situ hybridization. Researchers also may opt to receive unstained slides for subsequent staining in their own labs. The Histology Shared Resource has skilled technicians available for consultation. We encourage users and non-users alike to call for information. Pathologists can also provide consultation by appointment. Service for long-term projects is available in many cases.
