Watch for Information Technology survey this month

By Clay Eals

When something goes wrong with your computer, does the Center's Information Technology Department do a good job of helping you fix the problem?
That's the underlying question of a written customer satisfaction survey that all 2,400 faculty and staff will receive via interdepartmental mail this month from a consultant the department has hired to develop its strategic plan.
"Any organization, but particularly IT, needs to have an idea of where it's going and how to get there," says Judy Maus, director of projects and planning for Information Technology.
"Asking our customers what we do well and what we need to improve upon will provide a starting point for developing goals and strategies for the future."

The survey with about 40 questions that will take about 15 minutes to answer is only part of the work of the consultant, Pacific Technologies, Inc.
Also this month, Pacific Technologies will begin convening 15 focus groups, each of which will involve 10-15 faculty and staff from all Center divisions and will last about an hour and a half. Participants will be chosen by a steering committee consisting of the Center's senior staff, Maus says.
Participants in the focus groups will come from Grants and Contracts, Accounts Payable, the Administrative Managers Forum, Public Health Sciences Computing, Facilities and Operations, Clinical Research, patient care, Human Resources, the Network Administrators Group, Information Technology applications, Information Technology infrastructure, Human Biology, Basic Sciences, Shared Resources and a scientific Internet group.
After gathering and analyzing information from the survey and focus groups, Pacific Technologies will work with IT and the steering committee to prepare a strategic plan a set of goals and projects intended to guide the Information Technology Department, Maus says.

The strategic plan is on a fast track, she says. The goal is for Pacific to complete its work by the end of the calendar year so that the department is better prepared to begin the Center's annual budget & planning process in January.
