CENTER NEWS - THURS., AUGUST 17, 2000 SCIENCE SPOTLIGHT

Fund provides key early investments in ideas

By Barbara Berg

Because it's not always obvious when studies of a basic biological process will lend themselves to broader applications, researchers often use the phrase "serendipity in science."
Hutch research often leads to discoveries that may improve diagnosis or treatment, but many findings need more study to demonstrate potential public benefit. The Hutch's New Technology Development Fund provides short-term support to bring projects to a stage in which they attract venture financing or a licensing partner.
"A small investment at this early stage can produce dramatically increased valuation and success of Center technologies," says Dr. Lee Hartwell, president and director.
Dr. David Hockenbery in the Clinical Research Division (see related story) and Dr. Mark Roth in the Basic Sciences Division are the first two recipients of financial support from the fund.
The fund is made possible by Washington Research Foundation, as well as private donors. For application information, contact Rose Beer in Technology Transfer at rbeer@fhcrc.org or Ext. 6309. For general information about the fund, contact Pat McCowan in Development at pmccowan@fhcrc.org or Ext. 2673.
