Twenty-five year Hutch investigator Dr.Janet Daling received
the Donovan J. Thompson Excellence in Faculty Mentoring award
at the Nov. 10 Public Health Sciences All-Staff Meeting.
The award, which draws its name from the founding director
of PHS, honors faculty who have demonstrated exemplary dedication
to inspiring and mentoring young faculty.
PHS Division Director Dr. Ross Prentice presented Daling with
the honor, reading testimonials from glowing nomination letters.
Nominators described Daling as "a great role model,"
one who "transforms her relationship from teaching to guiding,"
and a person whose "outstanding quality is her generosity."
Daling's distinguished career in epidemiology, which includes
many studies with longtime colleague Dr. Noel Weiss, has made
advances in identifying risk factors for infertility, breast
cancer and anogenital cancers.
Prior to the award ceremony, Daling presented a pictorial
overview of her career in epidemiology that highlighted the achievements
of the young scientists she has mentored.
Accepting the award, Daling said,"I've gotten so much
more than I've given over the years. The Hutch is a wonderful
place to work."
Last year, Dr. Polly Feigl, who retired in December 1998 from
the Southwest Oncology Group Statistical Center, was the first
winner of the Thompson award. Thompson was founding head of the
PHS Program in Epidemiology and Biostatistics. He died in 1991.
