For Karen and Jamie Moyer, helping children and families in distress is the foundation of their life's work. That's one reason why they are strong supporters of Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center.
As founders of The Moyer Foundation and one of Major League Baseball's leading philanthropic families, Karen and Jamie have spearheaded numerous fund-raising projects for the Hutchinson Center In 2003, they teamed with the center to create The Gregory Fund, which is dedicated to funding research for early cancer detection.
Now they have stepped up to the plate to challenge others to support the Hutchinson Center. Moyer Foundation offered to match every dollar — up to $1.5 million — donated at the December 4, 2004 Hutch Holiday Gala during the "Help the Hutch" portion of the evening, an exciting 20-minute period where donors make cash gifts to support vital research.
Proceeds from Help the Hutch will benefit The Gregory Fund to advance early cancer-detection research at the center. The fund is named in honor of former Hutchinson Center patient Gregory Chaya, whose successful fight against leukemia inspired the Moyers to join the fight against cancer.
"We are deeply grateful to receive the Moyers' generous gift," said Dr. Lee Hartwell, president and director. "Karen and Jamie have been tireless in their efforts to support the Hutchinson Center for many years, and their dedication to early detection research has inspired many others in the community to join the cause. Donations from individuals and private organizations like The Moyer Foundation are critical to our research efforts."
The annual Hutch Holiday Gala is hosted by the Grace Heffernan Arnold Guild, a dedicated volunteer group that has helped the gala raise more than $36.5 million for research since 1975. Previous challenge-gift donors include Don Listwin, Craig and Marie Mundie, James and Sherry Raisbeck, and Bonnie and Jim Towne.
