Medical and Post-doctoral Fellowships

The Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center Program (FHCRC) in Infectious Diseases and the University of Washington (UW), Department of Laboratory Medicine, Division of Virology train both Ph.D. and M.D. fellows interested in pursuing a clinical or research career in infectious diseases, fungal pathogens, virology, sexually transmitted diseases, and vaccine development.  Since the early 1980's,  the ID/Virology faculty have mentored over 60 post-doctoral fellows, 20 pre-doctoral fellows, and numerous students.

The FHCRC Program in ID and the UW Virology Division consists of over 30 faculty members with a wide range of research interests. Further information on specific faculty research interests can be found in the ID Research Project section of this website.

The goal of the ID/Virology Fellowship Training Program is to provide the highest quality clinical and/or laboratory based training in order to equip trainees with the skills they will need for a career in academic infectious diseases/virology.  Fellows are encouraged to focus early in their fellowship on a particular area of research and to devote much of their time to a productive investigative experience.  Generally, the Program in ID accepts ID fellows mainly through the combined program with the University of Washington.  Preliminary information on the University of Washington's Infectious Disease fellowship training can be found at the Division of Allergy and Infectious Diseases website.

Graduate Training Program

The Program in ID and the Virology Division offers mentorship and training opportunities to graduate students as well.  The graduate students under our training are generally admitted to the University of Washington's various graduate training programs, for example, the Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) and are trained on-site, directly by their respective ID/Virology faculty mentors.  Pre-doctoral fellows may apply through the University of Washington Molecular and Cell-biology, STD, Microbiology and Pathobiology training programs.  Graduate students must matriculate through a certified program.

Summer Students Program

The Program in ID and the Virology Division developed this program to provide undergraduate students (and selected qualified high school students) with hands-on experience in our labs during the summer months of each year.  The students have the opportunity to work in one of our various labs, have meetings with Division Faculty, and present their work/project at the end of the summer to fellow students, mentors, and the Program's Scientific Staff .

There are various options for finding funding, prior to acceptance into the program including:  Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center Program, Howard Hughes Fellowships, the University of Washington Work Study Program (if applicable), or working in the lab to obtain college credits.

A schedule of events is available.
