Janet A. Englund, MD is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics, Children’s Hospital and Regional Medical Center, University of Washington, and Clinical Associate, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center.   Dr. Englund has a special interest in the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of respiratory virus infections in diverse populations, including young infants, pregnant women, and immunocompromised patients.  She works with Dr. Michael Boeckh and the FHCRC Infectious Disease section on the diagnosis and treatment of infections, including molecular detection of viral respiratory disease and aerosol ribavirin therapy   for the treatment of   RSV upper airway disease in stem cell recipients.  In collaboration with Drs. Rhoda Morrow and Jane Kuypers in the University of Washington Clinical Virology Laboratory, she is working on improved methods of detection of respiratory viruses, including respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and human metapneumovirus (hMPV).  She is interested in antiviral therapy and the development of antiviral resistance, and currently directs the Pediatric Infectious Disease arm of the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, where she is actively involved in the care and development of protocols for immunocompromised children.  Dr. Englund works closely with the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance hematologists, oncologists, and transplant specialists in the inpatient and outpatient care of complicated infections.

Dr. Englund has conducted clinical trials of different pediatric vaccines (influenza, acellular pertussis, hemophilus vaccines, pneumococcal vaccines, HIV vaccines, respiratory syncytial virus vaccines, parainfluenza virus vaccines, and combination DTaP vaccines, varicella vaccines), and is currently a principal investigator with Dr. Neuzil in a study of inactivated influenza vaccine in toddlers (sponsored by Aventis, Inc).  She remains active in the field of maternal immunization, and serves as a lecturer for the American Academy of Pediatrics, and an annual vaccine course sponsored by Foundation Merieux/World Health Organization.  She is a member of the FDA Antiviral Therapy Advisory Committee (2001-2004), and a council member of the Pediatric Infectious Disease Society (2003-2005).
