Adenovirus studies

M. Boeckh, R. Hackman, M. Huang, J. Englund

Adenovirus infections are an emerging problem in HCT recipients, especially after T cell depletion. However, even in T cell-replete patients, we could demonstrate an increase of adenovirus infections.   The spectrum of disease may also be underestimated since renal disease appears to be more common than previously recognized.   Dr. Meei-Li Huang has developed a real-time quantitative PCR assay that detects all serotypes of Adenovirus.   Studies are ongoing to determine the significance of adenovirus viremia in the HCT setting. Specifically, studies are ongoing or in the planning stage to

•  Determine the prognostic value of quantitative adenovirus plasma viremia in HCT recipients and patients with hematologic malignancies

•  Determine the whole spectrum of tissue-invasive disease

•  Develop effective antiviral treatment and prevention strategies.
