HIV-1 Vaccine Trials Unit (HVTU)

Dr. McElrath is the Principal Investigator of the FHCRC/University of Washington HIV Vaccine Trials Unit (HVTU) research program. The HVTU is one of ten centers nation-wide that is funded to carry out phase I, II, and III HIV vaccine trials to evaluate the safety and efficacy of candidate HIV vaccines. The HVTU has a number of scientific and administrative responsibilities including:

  1. Collaboration with the HIV Vaccine Trials Network (HVTN) in the design and development of phase I and II vaccine trial protocols,
  2. Participation in the phase I, II, and III clinical trials of candidate HIV vaccines,
  3. Recruitment, selection and enrollment of volunteers for the vaccine trials, Immunization and monitoring of volunteers, and organization of follow-up care for enrolled subjects
