DNA Replication

An accurate copy of the DNA found in the chromosomes is made during the cell cycle so that one copy of each chromosome is transmitted to daughter cells after cell division. Rare mistakes that occur during replication, if not repaired, are mutations.

During replication, the strands of the double helix separate, with each strand serving as a template for the synthesis of a new strand containing complementary bases.
