Clinical Research Surgery

Surgery is important for the diagnosis of cancer, staging of the tumor, and for removal of the tumor when possibe. From surgery we learn about the appearance of the tumor and how far it has spread. The pathology (microscopic examination of cells within tumor) indicates how aberrant the cells are and therefore how far the cancer has advanced. In some cases, the cancer can be completely eliminated by cutting out the tumor. In other cases, where a cure is not possible, surgical removal of as much of the tumor as is possible can relieve pain symptoms for a patient.
