Career Counseling for Scientists
During the course of their postdoctoral fellowship or graduate studies, many scientists choose to alter their career path. Some know exactly what they want to do, while others know more about what they
don't want to do. Regardless of whether you know or don't know what you want to do with your career, it may be useful to talk with the Director of the Office of Scientific Career Development about your choices and options.
Karen has been offering career counseling and information to postdoctoral fellows and graduate students for the past 8 years. In addition, she started at the Hutchinson Center as a postdoc and made a career transition away from the lab bench and into science education and administration.
Here is a partial list of "alternative" careers (e.g., not faculty at a research university or a scientist in industry) that former FHCRC postdocs and graduate students have successfully transitioned into:
- Biotechnology Program Director and Community College Professor
- Director, K-12 Science Education Programs
- Professor at a Primarily Undergraduate Institution
- Program Manager, FHCRC Shared Resources
- Program Manager, Office of Science Education, NIH
- Program Officer, Life Sciences Discovery Fund
- Science and Public Policy Analyst
- Science Writer
- Senior Licensing Associate, Technology Transfer
Please e-mail
Dr. Karen Peterson if you'd like to set up an appointment to talk with her about your career.
