About the Interdisciplinary Club

The idea for an interdisciplinary club arose at the centered interdivisional retreat in May, 1996. Many suggestions for how to increase interdivisional communication and interdisciplinary research were heard at the retreat. Often, suggestions were met by comments such as "That will take a lot of planning," or "We don't have funds for that – someone will have to write a grant." Looking for a simpler approach to the problem, Basic Sciences postdoc Christoph Sachsenmaier convened a lunchtime meeting at the retreat for all postdocs and students interested in learning about research in other divisions. About a dozen people attended and decided to begin monthly meetings where scientists would take turns presenting their research to each other. No grants or funding would be needed, nor a great deal of planning. The FHCRC Interdisciplinary Club was the result of that lunchtime meeting. The club officially held its first meeting in June, 1996, and has been meeting monthly ever since.

Meetings are currently held once a month, often on Fridays at 11:30 AM.  Sodas and pizza are provided at most club meetings.  You can subscribe to the club listserv to receive notices about meetings.  Presentations range from club members presenting their research at a level appropriate for an audience having backgrounds in diverse disciplines to broad sessions on what is known and what questions remain unanswered in an area of research. Presenters may be stopped to explain concepts that may seem elemental to themselves, but are mysterious to those from outside their field. Please join us for these meetings. All staff are welcome, including graduate students, postdocs, staff scientists, and faculty.
