Monica Rodriguez Current Mailing Address: Monica Rodriguez (aka “The Kid”) grew up in Southern California and received a B.A. in Biology from Amherst College in May 2003. She was the very first member of the newly minted Malik Lab, where she worked as a research technician from August 2003 to August 2005. In addition to helping set up the lab, Monica worked on three projects, the Responder satellites, dosage compensation and the abnormal oocyte gene in Drosophila melanogaster. As she was leaving to join graduate school in the Department of Genetics at Stanford University, she swore off any future fly work. Within a year, she had joined the lab of Dr. Bruce Baker, studying fly neurophysiology and behavior, where she continues to ponder mysteries of what really goes on in the male brain!

Benjamin Wiggins Current Mailing Address: Ben grew up in Corvallis, Oregon and attended the University of Oregon. He joined the MCB program in the Fall of 2003, and joined the Malik lab in the Summer of 2004. For his Master’s thesis, Ben examined the population genetics of the Drosophila gene Cdc6, a vital component of the DNA replication machinery. He found surprising traces of rapid evolution in Cdc6 between closely related subspecies of Drosophila. He left the lab in summer of 2006 to pursue a career in Education. While in the MCB Program, Ben also coached a Seattle high school club Ultimate Frisbee team known as Moho, and was an assistant coach on the U. S. Junior National team. He currently plays with the Seattle Sockeye, an elite traveling Ultimate Frisbee team and spends his spare time (?) in a never ending quest for bad science fiction and good sushi. |
