A summer research program for undergraduate students between their junior and senior year of studies is established at the Hutchinson Center. This program is currently administrated by Dr. Barry Stoddard (Basic Sciences Division), Dr. Katie Peichel (Human Biology Division), Dr. Deborah Banker (Division of Clinical Research) and by Ms. Lori Blake (Adminstration).

Students spend a ten week period as part of a research team after selecting an area of interest, such as: cellular biology, developmental biology, genetics, membrane biology, molecular biology, molecular immunology, structural biology, oncogenes, or virology.  Weekly student/faculty research meetings take place throughout the summer, and students are encouraged to participate in other Center colloquia and seminars.

For the summer of 2004, the intern program runs from JUNE 14 THROUGH AUGUST 20.  Students must be able to commit to to the dates of the program to apply and to be considered for acceptance in the program.

The current stipend for the 10-week program is $4000. The center pays partial travel costs for students (up to $300). Housing and meals costs are paid directly by the students in the program. The Hutchinson Center negotiates and facilitates a housing option for out-of -town students at Stevens Court residence hall, an apartment-style residence hall at the University of Washington. This facility is about 10 minutes from the center by bus. The approximate cost at Stevens Court is $1300 for 10 weeks, and students in the intern program are housed together in individual four-person apartments on a same-sex basis.  Passes for regional Metro transport (buses) are provided to students for the summer.
