Ph.D. candidates at New Mexico State University are invited to conduct cancer research related to their dissertation project in a laboratory at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, Washington. The Hutchinson Center has an international reputation for its pioneering research in biological sciences, bone marrow and stem cell transplantation, cancer prevention, and epidemiology. Information about specific research projects and faculty interests can be found at http://www.fhcrc.org/science/phs/.
This program has been designed to enhance the quality of the P.h.D candidate's dissertation or thesis project or expand the results that the student is able to obtain. The student will spend three quarters (nine months) at the FHCRC conducting a specific portion of his/her research project. During this period, the student will matriculate at the University of Washington and will take UW or FHCRC courses related to their research interests.
The Hutchinson Center will provide a salary equivalent to that of a Molecular and Cellular Biology graduate student enrolled at the University of Washington, as well as partial travel costs to and from Seattle (up to $450). Students are responsible for their housing and food expenses; however program staff will be actively involved in helping students find temporary housing in Seattle. A quarterly pass for regional Metro transportation (buses) may be purchased for $30.00. Additionally, a free shuttle between the University of Washington and the Hutchinson Center operates several times per hour and is within a short walk of Stevens Court.
Eligible students must be Ph.D. candidates enrolled at New Mexico State University. The program's start and end dates are flexible.
Students interested in applying to participate in the Ph.D. Lab-Based Research Program may do so by completing and submitting an application. Applications are accepted on an on-going basis.
