Nutrition & Exercise for Women - Participation Requirements
What is involved in the screening process?
If you qualify for the study and are interested in participating,
you will be asked to complete a number of screening activities.
These will include:
- Questionnaires about your medical history and health habits
- Three clinic visits (including collection of blood and urine samples) at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center
- Walking exercise test on a treadmill
- DEXA scan at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center
What sort of lifestyle changes will I be asked to make?
Not everyone will be asked to make changes right away. If you are eligible
after the screening process and interested in
participating in the study, the computer will assign you by chance
(like the toss of a coin) to one of the following groups:
- Exercise
- Calorie Reduction
- Exercise and Calorie Reduction
- Delayed intervention
Exercise Group
Participants will exercise with a trainer in small groups three times per week for one year. In addition, they will exercise independently 2 times per week, for a total of 5 exercise sessions weekly. Participants will have use of
the FHCRC Exercise Research Facility and work with an exercise specialist, FREE of charge. They will be taught to exercise in a way that is safe and effective for them.
Calorie Reduction
Participants will meet with a nutrition expert alone and in groups to discover knowledge and tools
helpful in changing dietary behaviors.
For the first four months of the study meetings will be every week, tapering off over the course of the study.
Exercise Group combined with Calorie Reduction
These participants will meet with a trainer and nutritionist as described above.
Delayed Exercise Group
After completion of the 12 month study time period and requirements, participants enrolled in the delayed (control) group will receive 2 months of group exercise training at the FHCRC Research Exercise Center under the supervision of our exercise specialist as well as 4 group meetings with the nutritionist. Participants in this group will also be provided with study materials on healthy diet.
