SELECT is a Southwest Oncology Group trial that is testing vitamin E and selenium, alone and in combination, for the primary prevention of prostate cancer. SELECT has recruited over 35,000 men in over 240 sites, and will continue follow-up until 2012. The Diet and Nutrient Assessment Substudy will examine associations of dietary supplement use, nutrient intake, and serum nutrient concentrations with prostate cancer risk. In collaboration with other SELECT scientists, nutrition data collected in this substudy will be used to examine interactions of diet with study treatment, genetic polymorphisms, and other environmental exposures. At baseline, the substudy is collecting a 10-year history of supplement use, a food frequency measure, toenails, and a serum sample. At each annual follow-up, data are collected on dietary supplement use in the past year. Data from this study will allow a rigorous evaluation of whether dietary supplements and diet affect prostate cancer risk.
