ExCel Study - Time Commitment and Cost
How long will the study last?
At least five years. This study is looking at whether taking a medication (exemestane) could reduce the risk of developing breast cancer in postmenopausal women at high risk of breast cancer.
This is an outpatient study.
Volunteers will be required to come to a clinic visit at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center at 7 different time points over a 5 year period. This visit will last approximately 30 minutes. You will be asked to take a pill every day for 5 years.
We may request an update on your health after five years have gone by.
What will it cost me?
The following services will be provided free of charge as long as you are part of the ExCel Study:
- The study drug exemestane or placebo
- The blood work and physical exams (including breast exams) performed at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center
- Parking at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center
You and/or your insurance company will be responsible for paying for:
- Your initial and yearly mammograms
- Your initial DEXA scan
- Any ultrasounds or diagnostic mammogram that the radiologist recommends following your study mammograms
- Any medical costs for any injury or illness resulting from participation in this study
