Summary of Participation — What You Can Expect
Listed
below is a summary of the activities for persons enrolled in this study. During actual participation, the study
staff will provide detailed instructions for each component and guide
participants through the various steps. Participation takes place over approximately one week and includes one
scheduled interview, collection of urine, and collection of blood samples.
In-Home Visit
The first step is for an
Interviewer to meet with the study participant in his home or other location
for approximately 30-45 minutes to:
- Explain
the study in detail
- Review
the study consent forms and sign forms
- Provide
the study participant with a Participation Notebook that includes forms and
questionnaires to be completed before and during the collection periods. The Notebook contains step-by-step
instructions and the Interviewer provides additional instructions.
- Instruct
the participant on when to do the urine collections and how to pack samples for
Interviewer pick-up.
- Instruct
the participant on how and when to wear the Actiwatch – a watch-like
device that measures movement during sleep.
- Instruct
the participant on how and when to take temperature measurements (Night Shift
ONLY).
- Provide
all equipment and supplies.
Urine Sample Pick-Ups and Blood Collection
These
are brief, 20 minute Interviewer visits. Day Shift Workers have two Urine Pick-ups and blood collection
appointments and Night Shift Workers have three. At each scheduled appointment
the Interviewer will:
- Retrieve
the urine samples from the participant's home or workplace
- Draw
a blood sample from the participant
- Review
and collect specific forms from the Participation Notebook.
- On
the last Pick-up, the Interviewer will also collect any leftover supplies, the
Participation Notebook and the Actiwatch
