Impact Lives

President's Circle

President’s Circle funding supports a wide variety of research that impacts our health, from studies on how to prevent cancer through diet and exercise, to innovative ways to detect cancer early when it is most curable, to less-invasive treatments with the potential to eliminate cancer cells without harmful side effects.

President’s Circle investments make a significant impact in the innovative research taking place every day at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, and in the lives touched because of it.

The power of President's Circle support

Barry Stoddard, Ph.D.

Hutchinson Center scientists rely on private contributions like those from President’s Circle members to help them transform raw material from the labs into lifesaving breakthroughs for patients. In one particularly dramatic metamorphosis, Dr. Barry Stoddard is using President's Circle support to pave the way toward cures for certain genetic and infectious diseases as well as neurodegenerative and cognitive disorders. The raw material for these cures is a fascinating family of proteins called homing endonecleases, which Barry and his colleagues have shown can be used to modify and repair individual genes in living human cells.
There are several potential life-impacting applications thus far for these discoveries, including inherited blood and immune disorders, neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s, and infectious diseases including HIV.
