The Vaccine and Infectious Disease Division's international research initiatives are advancing the understanding of infection-related cancers and infectious diseases. VIDD researchers take enormous pride in their efforts to predict, detect, treat and prevent infectious diseases in humans. We currently have programs operating in the following countries:

Uganda

The UCI/Hutchinson Centre Cancer Alliance is a collaborative venture to establish a state-of-the-art cancer treatment facility located in Kampala, Uganda. The hope of this joint effort between the Hutchinson Center and the Uganda Cancer Institute is the development of new low-cost prevention and treatment strategies for ameliorating the high burden of infection-related cancers. Clinicians and scientists will work together to enhance patient access to care, diagnosis and research-based treatment.

South Africa

The Hutchinson Centre Research Institute - South Africa is a nonprofit, South African entity established by Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center with support from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation in Seattle, Washington. This institute includes the Cape Town HVTN Immunology Laboratory, a state of the art immunology laboratory and training facility that is scheduled for completion in 2013. This laboratory supports clinical trials work conducted through VIDD’s HIV Vaccine Trials Network (HVTN).

China

The FHCRC/UW China Health Initiative is a collaboration between VIDD, the University of Washington Institute of Translational Medicine (ITM) and several other research institutes and government agencies in China, including the China Center for Disease Control (CCDC) in Beijing and the Sun Yat-sen University in Guangzhou. The goal of the collaboration is to focus on infectious diseases that threaten global health and combine the best resources of each country to enable early identification of infectious disease outbreaks, as well as to accelerate the development of therapeutics to control these diseases. Examples of resources to be shared are scientific data sets, statistical analysis methods, clinical research protocol development and operation, and cross training of our scientific staff.
